Pet Phizog Animal Portraits

Ruth Brady McCarthy was born and resident in Dublin. I hold a degree in Visual Communications from DIT Dublin and a Diploma in the History of European Painting from Trinity College Dublin. I am fascinated by animals of all sorts and after years spent working in advertising, print, promotions and most recently in the charity sector, I have rediscovered my first love, drawing.

I work in pastel and pencil from your own photos. The most important thing when selecting a good photograph for me to work from is to make sure your pet isn't tense or nervous. Wait until they forget you are following or observing them with a camera in hand and then the photos will be more relaxed and typical of their behaviour.

When taking the picture get down to the animal's eye level. If you can't get down to them then elevate the animal on to a table or sofa. Taking a picture from above or far away from the animal won't lend itself to a great image. Expression is everything in a portrait, particularly for a dog or cat portrait; the eyes say it all!
